A Night at the Rooftop Cinema Club

Written By Jhaynane Bastien

Camber has been a godsend living here in LA. It’s a newsletter with all the latest happenings across the city.

Well, this week, as I scrolled for things to do, I landed on a cool thing: rooftop cinema. I love movies, and I love rooftops, so two of my favorite things together was like the light of the Gods shining right on me, telling me to go.

As I scrolled through Rooftop Cinema Club’s website, I landed on something very… auspicious. (It’s Jaya’s favorite movie.) Mamma Mia was playing this Monday. I turned to Jaya (my business partner) and told her the news.
“Book it,” she said without missing a beat. Booked and ready.

We went on Monday. Mamma Mia was playing at 7:40 p.m. Jaya and I—who recently embraced CP time—were cutting it close to showtime as we made our way through the garage of the Level Hotel, following all the signs leading us down the rabbit hole. We checked in, were handed a ticket for a warm drink or popcorn, our individual headsets, and were escorted to the elevator.

When we finally made it to the rooftop, we rushed to the concession stand. Surprisingly, it had a ton of great options. Still, Jaya deducted points for not having a slushy machine. After grabbing our warm ciders and a pretzel, we turned the corner and grabbed the two Adirondack chairs—just in time for the opening scene. We cozied up under our blankets, slid on our headphones, and watched Mamma Mia under the Los Angeles skyline.

Rooftop Cinema Club hosts Fireside Film, an outdoor event where you can watch movies, old and new, under the stars, surrounded by buildings reaching the gods. You must buy the tickets in pairs, so it’s a great date night idea—but not friendly for those who want to enjoy a movie alone.

Little tip: Make sure to get your fire turned on before the show starts. They can’t turn it on once the movie begins.

I’d definitely recommend going to Rooftop Cinema Club—4 out of 5 stars from me.
